New History Courses Offered at Carroll Community College

Indulge your passion for history at Carroll Community College. The college is offering four new history courses this spring. Learn about the Vicksburg Campaign, see rare Maryland Civil War photographs or American military photographs and more. The following courses will be offered:

The Common Soldier
A new view of four historical American wars! You are there in the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I and II through the eyes of the common soldier. Handle many original and reproduction military artifacts from the Major Frederick C. Maisel Jr. Memorial Collection as you see the officers, rations, pay, medical care, weapons, equipment, uniforms, strategies, morale and more in a new way.  The instructor is Butch Maisel.
Cost: $63 ($25 for MD senior adults)

The Vicksburg Campaign
The Federal attempts to capture Vicksburg lasted over six months and involved massive amounts of resources. Vicksburg was the key to control of the Mississippi River and both sides fought valiantly to control it. Explore the different attempts to capture the city and examine the battles of this campaign in detail. Analyze the importance of this campaign as it affected the outcome of the American Civil War. The instructor is David Booz.

A House Divided: Maryland Civil War Photography Exposed
Over 100 rare photographs from the Kelbaugh Collection and other private resources are featured to tell this compelling story. From the first casualties, the military camps and fortifications, and the American dead on battlefields, the stories of the photographers, their images and their dramas are recounted in this lively program. The instructor is Ross J. Kelbaugh.

1840-1920 American Military Photographs, Uncovered
View more than 100 rare photographs and daguerreotypes from the Kelbaugh Collection and other resources that record the Mexican War, Civil War, Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection to World War I. Learn about the formats and subjects of military photographs made during this era and gain sources for researching & purchasing military photographs. The instructor is Ross J. Kelbaugh.
