Practical Nursing Graduates at Carroll Community College
Pass Licensing Exam on the First Try
At last week's monthly board of trustees meeting, Carroll Community College (Carroll) President Faye Pappalardo announced that 100 percent of the 19 Practical Nursing Program graduates who took their licensing exam after graduation in July passed on the first try. Practical Nursing graduates who pass their exam become licensed practical nurses, or L.P.N.s
An L.P.N. is a key member of a health care team who provides patient care under the supervision or direction of a registered nurse or physician. L.P.Ns are known for their "bedside" patient skills. These providers work in hospitals, nursing homes, doctor's offices, clinics, and in home health care.
The program at Carroll is a certificate program approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing. After completing pre-clinical requirements, students complete one year of clinical study. Some pre-clinical requirements include anatomy and physiology, and microbiology. Some clinical requirements address issues in practical nursing and teach dosage calculations.
The program admits students selectively based on grades in pre-clinical courses and results from recommendations.
A Praiseworthy Accomplishment
"The 100 percent pass rate for the LPN exam serves to reinforce the college's emphasis on the teaching and learning process," said Dr. Faye Pappalardo, president of Carroll. "Congratulations to all the students who were successful in this endeavor."
"I am pleased with the excellent pass rate of our students. This is an indicator of the level of preparation they receive at Carroll and the hard work that all of our students put into their studies. I wish them every success in the workforce," said Nursing Program Director Nancy Perry.
Carroll opened its Nursing and Allied Health Building last fall, adding labs and classroom space to prepare students for careers in the expanding health care industry.
Carroll is located at 1601 Washington Rd. in Westminster, Md.
