Carroll Community College VISTA Jeana Biondo Receives Governor's Volunteer Service Award

Westminster, Md., April 14, 2010-Jeana Biondo,  an Americorps VISTA volunteer at Carroll Community College, has been selected as a recipient of the Governor's Volunteer Service Award. An awards ceremony will be held to honor outstanding volunteers across the state on April 19, 2010 in Annapolis. Jeana began her year of service at Carroll in August, 2009.
The goal for individuals who serve s a VISTA is the eradication of poverty in the United States. As a VISTA volunteer at the community college, Biondo has initiated several service projects to benefit the Human Services Program (HSP) in Carroll County. An example of one of those projects was Frosty's Gifts. The college partnered with HSP and their Neighbors in Need program to 'adopt' two local families for the holiday season and provide gifts of new clothes, outerwear, and toys for nine children within the two families. Biondo helped pair college employees and students with the needs of the children. Twenty-seven people in the college community donated items for these local children.
Another HSP program that Biondo has worked with is the Cold Weather Shelter. Biondo has gathered supplies, donations, and students to help with the preparation of meals for the clients at the shelter.
"I wish to congratulate Jeana for her fine work and dedication to volunteerism," said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo.
"Though Jeana is involved in direct service many times, her focus is to help facilitate student involvement in service projects around the county," said Kristie Crumley, director of Student Life. "To date, Jeana has helped to facilitate 162 community volunteers who have served 979 hours of service."

"I feel surprised and thankful for this award," said Biondo. "The community needs people who show they care by helping. Volunteering is a selfless act that is good for personal enrichment throughout one's lifetime."
Biondo is a graduate of Carroll Community College and of Stevenson University.
National Volunteer Week is April 18 to 25, 2010.  Biondo will receive the award at the beginning of the week.
