Carroll Community College Students Celebrate Service with Boys and Girls Club
Carroll Community College students from the Education Academic Community are hosting a holiday celebration on Thursday, Dec. 15 at the Westminster Girls and Boys Club, located at the United Methodist Church on Union Street in Westminster, Md. This event is a result of service hours offered by students this semester, such as tutoring and mentoring at the club. Students shared the skills they have learned in education and elementary math courses with club members.
Approximately 15 education majors are participating in the holiday celebration, which begins with homework tutoring, moves to a variety of holiday crafts that children can share with their families, and ends with special recognition of club members
"This event provides a wonderful opportunity for Carroll students to support Phyllis Hammond, director of the club, and her members, by sharing talent and time with a very special group of kids," said Susan Sies, associate professor.
"The holiday celebration is an event that education students and faculty look forward to,
by the end of each semester," said Sies. "Both my students and I value the learning experience and the community partnership that the Boys and Girls Club provides for the college. My students always point out to me the lessons they learn from club members. Whether we are celebrating winter or spring holidays, all of us from Carroll Community College reap rich rewards from helping others."
The Education Academic Community is one of several Academic Communities on campus which serve to bring together faculty and students with similar interests to participate in out-of-class activities such as lectures, field trips, events, and more. Instructor Kristie Crumley was instrumental in starting this community service project for the Boys and Girls Club.
Carroll Community College is located at 1601 Washington Rd. in Westminster, Md.
