Online Service Connects Web Users with Librarians 'Round the Clock
Beginning this week, Carroll Community College students researching papers, gathering information for class, or looking up any subject now have the ability to go online and submit questions to librarians who will respond 24/7.
The college participates in a service called Maryland AskUsNow!, which uses the expertise of trained librarians to provide answers to questions, research guidance, and help in navigating the Internet. Maryland AskUsNow! is a cooperative service of Maryland libraries, with over 30 participating public, college-based, and other libraries. Each participating library lends the services of its librarians to answer questions for an allotted number of hours each week.
Residents of the state of Maryland are also eligible to use the service.
The live, interactive service enables users to communicate with librarians using Internet chat. Typically, sessions may last from five to 20 minutes for basic questions, with more time allowed for more involved queries. Occasionally, the librarian may forward the question to another expert or a local library for an answer via e-mail. These replies may take about 72 hours.
