Carroll County Community Mediation Center Receives Award

Westminster, Md., The Carroll County Community Mediation Center, which operates under the auspices of Carroll Community College, was one of 17 community mediation centers in the state to receive the Access to Justice Award from the Maryland Access to Justice Commission.

The Maryland Access to Justice Award recognizes individuals, programs and entities in the State that improve the ability of all Marylanders to access the courts or to get legal help in civil legal matters so they can benefit from the rights, protections, services and opportunities that the law provides.

In addition, Community Mediation Maryland, a state-level non-profit which supports local community mediation centers, also received the Access to Justice Award.

The awards were presented at the Maryland Judicial Conference on May 9 in Cambridge, Md. Maryland justices attended the conference. Patricia Ryan, director of the Carroll County Community Mediation Center, was present to receive the award on behalf of Carroll Community College.

“The Carroll County Community Mediation Center works collaboratively with the circuit court, the district court and the state’s attorney’s office to provide pre-trial and day-of-trial mediation services for a variety of disputes,” said Ryan. “Community members accessing the legal system are given the opportunity to use mediation to resolve their disputes in a cost-effective and timely manner. The result is often a reduction or elimination of the need for court hearings and trials in matters such as small claims, business/consumer, landlord/tenant disputes, child custody, visitation and other family cases. “The Carroll County Community Mediation Center was honored to receive the Access to Justice Award and appreciates the ongoing support and sincere commitment to alternative dispute resolution processes from all the judges in Carroll County.”

The Carroll County Community Mediation Center operates under the auspices of Carroll Community College to promote peaceful resolution of conflict and collaborative problem solving by providing a range of conflict resolution services, education and professional training to the Carroll County Community.
