General Education Course
The Science and Theory of Health and Wellness is a study of essential health practices as they relate to current concepts of preventive medicine. In the pursuit of a wellness lifestyle, this course investigates the latest scientific findings germane to the major diseases and causes of premature death in the U.S. The importance of self-responsibility within a wellness lifestyle is stressed. Emphasis on nutrition, weight management, stress management, substance abuse, health frauds, chronic diseases, and human sexuality will hopefully motivate the student to take the initiative and thereby enhance her or his quality of life. Prerequisite: exemption/completion of READ-101. Three hours lecture each week. Three credits. Three billable hours. GENERAL EDUCATION
Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate the ability to use proper terms/concepts as they relate to major health topics. 2. Differentiate between a preventive (proactive) and treatment (reactive) model of healthcare. 3. Assess his/her own personal behavior, establish lifestyle goals and synthesize new health behaviors that promote personal wellness 4. Demonstrate effective public speaking skills and interpersonal communication skills. 5. Apply appropriate library research skills for researching a specific health topic. 6. Plan and carry out a service project that promotes wellness on campus or in the community. 7. Demonstrate effective written and critical thinking skills as they relate to health behaviors.
