Course Description

EMS-120, Pharmacology I, prepares the paramedic student to understand pharmacology and how it is utilized in the paramedic practice. Students will be required to participate in medication administration labs. Course content will include the history and evolution of pharmacology, pertinent medical-legal information, effects of medication on special populations, pharmacology nomenclature and terminology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and the selection and the safe use of dugs utilizing standing orders. Prerequisites: successful completion of all required sciences and EMS-101. This course delivers content and activities online. Sixteen hours lecture. Twenty-four hours asynchronous lecture. Four hours lab. Two credits. Two billable hours. Additional $75 fee required. Offered Fall term only.

Course Objectives and Grading Information


1. Students will describe drug standards, legislation and enforcement agencies pertinent to the paramedic and what the paramedic’s responsibilities are in relation to drug administration. (Program 2,4; Gen Ed 2,3,7)

2. Students will distinguish between drug forms and identify the different types of drugs. (Program 2; Gen Ed 2,3)

3. Students will discuss factors that influence drug absorption, distribution, and elimination. (Program 3,5; Gen Ed 2,3)

4. Students will identify special considerations for administering pharmacological agents to special populations. (Program 1,2,4; Gen Ed 2,3,6,7)

5. Students will demonstrate proficiency in mathematical calculations and working with mathematical equivalents utilizing that knowledge to calculate medication dosages. (Program 3,5; Gen Ed 2,3)

6. Students will identify and discuss the “six rights” of drug administration and correlate these with the principles of medication administration. (Program 1, 2,3; Gen Ed 1,2,7)

7. Students will demonstrate proficiency in preparing equipment and patients for medication administration via oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intravenous, topical, rectal, gastric tube, and inhaled routes and dispose of contaminated items appropriately. (Program 4; Gen Ed 2)

8. Students will synthesize a pharmacological management plan. (Program 3,5; Gen Ed 2,3)
