An interdisciplinary conference for professionals working with older adults and their families. The conference includes a keynote presentation and training workshops. Social workers and counselors who attend the entire program are eligible for 4.75 Category 1 CEU’s.

By the year 2023 the United States will have reached full “Florida-ization”, meaning nearly one in five Americans will be over the age of 65. What are the many social and economic implications of the graying of America? A gerontologist will reflect on the challenges, but more importantly, the many opportunities that population aging brings to our lives.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia: What to Look For, How to Help

Professionals working with a senior population will invariably interact with those who will suffer from Alzheimer’s and related dementia. The more you know, the better you can care for these individuals. Learn to differentiate between Alzheimer’s and its symptoms, Dementia. Discover ways to help clients as you regularly interact with them. Assist clients and their families to connect with resources available in our community.

Addressing the Elephant in the Room: Helping Seniors with End of Life Issues

Learn about the senior population in our community and the prevalence of chronic illnesses. Identify end of life landmarks and tasks, and how to handle difficult conversations with clients and families. Options for care - matching wants, needs and reality - and care planning will be addressed. Hospice philosophy and services will also be explored in this informative and interactive presentation.

The Difference Between Life and Death: Powers of Attorney and Guardianships vs. Wills

How does one determine if a lack of capacity or merely poor decision making is behind a bad decision? What does one do in either of these circumstances? Address these questions by looking at guardianship and the alternatives.

Patient Centered Care: The Emerging Culture Change in Health Care

In an effort to provide quality service and satisfy the needs of the health care consumer while preventing chronic readmissions, the focus of care is shifting to the patient.
