Special Admissions - Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA)
If you are interested in the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program, you must first be accepted for admission to Carroll and then apply for the PTA program .
Acceptance into the program is based upon your academic ability, aptitude for a career as a physical therapist assistant, and communication skills. Carroll County residents are given preference over non-residents with similar qualifications and experience.

Steps to apply for admission to Carroll
- Submit a completed Enrollment Application
- Request your high school and college transcripts be sent to the Records Office.
- Contact an Academic Advisor at 410-386-8435 to determine if placement tests are required. If placement tests are required, contact the Testing Center.
Steps to apply for the PTA program
- Complete and submit a PTA application by May 1 to the PTA Program Director's office.
- Successfully complete the following program course requirements prior to the September of the year you expect to start the program. Certified midterm grades on the College letterhead from the course professor will be accepted until transcripts are available.
- Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 (BIOL-210) and Human Anatomy and Physiology 2 (BIOL-211) with a minimum grade of "C’ in each course (must be current within the last three years.)
- General Education mathematics course with a with a minimum grade of "B." MATH-115, Introduction to Statistical Methods are recommended.
- College Writing I (ENGL-101) with a minimum grade of "B."
- Completion of at least 75 documented hours of volunteer work, and/or clinical experience in a physical therapy facility, preferably in more than one setting, under the supervision of a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant.
- Provide evaluations from two professional references - forms enclosed with the PTA application. A supervisor or mentor in the facility(ies) needs to complete the evaluations. Make additional copies of the form as needed.
- Complete a written PTA assignment in the College Testing Center between Jan. 1 and May 1 of the application year. Call the Testing Center at 410-386-8450 for an appointment.
- Meet for an interview.
- Prior to full admission, satisfy the following before Aug. 15 of the year you are scheduled to enter the program:
- Complete of the following titers or immunizations: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tetanus, Hepatitis B, a TB PPD test, and chickenpox.
- Show proof of enrollment in a hospitalization insurance policy.
- Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification for health care providers.
- Evidence of good health as verified by a physician completed exam form. (The form is available after admission to the program.)
The PTA Program Director reserves the right to refuse admission to the program for failure to satisfy the above requirements.
