Your First Advising Session

Q. What is a First Advising Session (FAS)?

Your First Advising Session will offer an overview of College resources in a small group setting of new students. An academic advisor will explain your test results and how to use them to create an academic or transfer plan. College registration, attendance, refund procedures, and other academic requirements and information will also be explained.

Q. Who presents the FAS?

Sessions are led by an academic advisor.

Q. Why do I need to attend an FAS?

The goal of the FAS is to give you a better understanding about College life and to prepare you with a solid foundation for success at Carroll Community College and beyond. If you have a transcript documenting the successful completion of at least twelve academic credits (four courses), you are not required to attend a First Advising Session.

Q. What will I learn about in an FAS?

Information will be shared about:

  • Important dates to remember on the academic calendar
  • The many campus resources available to you
  • Academic planning - your degree program requirements
  • Transfer planning - strategies for selecting courses for transfer

Q. How long will the FAS be?

Please allow about one-and-one-half hours for the presentation. Allow additional time if you would like to register for classes while you're there.

Q. Will I receive my placement test results?

Yes, you will receive placement test results and an explanation of scores.

Q.Will I register for my classes at the FAS?

You have the option at the end of the session to prepare a schedule for your first semester's coursework which you would then take to the Registration Office for processing.

Q. Am I required to register for my classes at the FAS?

You have the option to return for one on one assistance with an advisor if you have questions about what to take.

Q.What is a "Concurrent" or "Released-Time" student?

Concurrent or Released-Time Students take high school and college courses in the same term. Eligible students need permission from their high school.

Concurrent Students need to bring a signed concurrent enrollment application (from your high school guidance office) to their FAS session, or at the time of registration.

Q. What should I do if I cannot attend the FAS I scheduled?
