Carroll Community College Holds Twenty-Second Commencement

Westminster, Md., -On Wednesday, May 27, 2015, Carroll Community College (Carroll) will hold its twenty-second Commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. at McDaniel College.

Commencement is an opportunity for students who graduated in August and December, and who applied to graduate in May, to celebrate the attainment of their degrees or certificates. In August, 2014, Carroll had 81 graduates. In December 2014, Carroll had 231 graduates. In May, 2015, 289 students have applied to graduate. Although all eligible students are invited to participate in the ceremony, as of today, there will be 224 attending.

Commencement Speaker

The Commencement speaker will be Dr. James M. Cherry, the scientific program director at a major federally funded research facility in the state of Maryland His professional credentials over the years include co-developing a technology development arm of one of the National Laboratories. He has worked to develop novel technologies in several areas of biomedical research with Qiagen , including genetics and genomics expression platforms and other scientific disciplines.

Dr. Cherry serves as a scientific advisor for local high school seniors and college students that intern at his research facility. He serves on scientific advisory boards for several universities in the state of Maryland. He has also been an adjunct professor at Hood College since 2012 and Mt. St Mary's. Dr. Cherry has also been selected to be on the Board of Directors for a local all-girls private school in Frederick County.

"We are honored to have a Commencement speaker of Dr. Cherry's caliber and professional background. He is exceptionally engaging and at ease with students," said Carroll President Dr. James D. Ball. "I believe he will inspire and motivate our graduates to continue to take bold steps in their personal and professional lives."

Student Speaker

Carroll graduate Rachael Boone will serve as student speaker at Commencement. Boone has created the educational foundation for her future career. She has been involved in an array of activities on campus, from being a Hill Scholar to a Student Ambassador to a student employee of the college. Rachael is graduating with an associate's degree in business administration and will be transferring to a four-year university to complete her bachelor's degree.
