Carroll’s AAS degree in Law Enforcement provides students with the introductory knowledge and skills needed for a rewarding career in a law enforcement role.

Current or former officers who have completed an approved state-certified police academy are qualified to receive up to 45 articulated credits at Carroll as approved by the Program Director.

The Associate of Applied Science, Law Enforcement provides students with introductory knowledge and skills needed for a career in law enforcement.  Completion of this degree is also intended to enhance the promotion and supervision opportunities of an in-service police officer. Police officers who have completed an approved state certified police academy may receive up to 45 articulated credits as approved by the Program Director.

Program Goals

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Communicate in written and oral modes to express knowledge of law enforcement situations.
  2. Employ various thinking strategies to develop well-reasoned judgments in commonly-encountered policing situations.
  3. Identify a given crime, crime classification, and section number utilizing the Annotated Code of Maryland Criminal Law digest and proper investigative techniques. 
  4. Demonstrate acceptable practical skills required for an entry-level police officer.

What does this program cost?

Carroll’s Associate of Applied Science in Law Enforcement degree consists of four semesters of full-time study. You can complete your Associate degree for less than the cost of one year at a 4-year college or university.

Our AAS degree in Law Enforcement can improve an officer’s chances of being promoted. Most police departments require an Associate’s degree to qualify for:

  • Corporal
  • Sergeant
  • First Sergeant

With a higher rank comes a pay increase, making an average of $3,000 more.

Having a degree will also assist a person retiring from the police force to more effectively pursue another career (e.g., teaching).
