    Maintain a safe and supportive campus environment by receiving, evaluating, and responding to reports of student behaviors of concern with the purpose of prevention and early intervention.


    The CARE Team focuses on the prevention and early intervention of students who are experiencing distress or engaging in harmful or disruptive behaviors.

    The Team

    Composed of key administrators, faculty, and staff - continually assesses College policies related to student behavioral issues in an effort to prevent campus violence. The CARE Team responds proactively to student behavior issues and may work with the Crisis Management Team to respond to campus crisis situations.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Receiving and gathering information on student behavioral issues.
    • Developing and coordinating specific strategies to manage potentially disruptive or harmful behavior.
    • Recommending appropriate action(s) consistent with college policies and procedures.
    • Developing and disseminating information on identifying and preventing disruptive behavior.
    • Providing education and training to the college community.
    • Providing referrals to the Student Assistance Program (SAP) or other college/community resources.

    You can assist the CARE Team with identifying and reporting potentially disruptive or harmful behavior.

    Identifying Key Indicators


    • Class absences increase
    • Interaction patterns change 
    • Behavior becomes inappropriate or disrupts classroom learning
    • Consistently late or leaves class early


    • Statements of distress, family problems or other difficulties.
    • Unprovoked or uncontrolled anger or hostility
    • Exaggerated personality traits - more withdrawn or animated than usual 
    • Persistently sad/tearful.
    • Expressions of concern by other students


    • Physical appearance deteriorates
    • Lack of personal hygiene
    • Excessively fatigued
    • Visible weight changes
    • Bleary eyed, hung over or smells of alcohol


    • Statements related to death, dying, feelings of hopelessness or "is going away for a long time"
    • Essays/papers focus on despair, suicide or death
    • Behavior is highly agitated
    • Suspicious, paranoid or feels persecuted
    • Threatens to harm self or others


    In emergency or urgent time-sensitive situations you should ...

    • Stay calm
    • Dial 911- if appropriate - and tell the operator your on-campus location (i.e. building and room number) and the nature of the emergency
    • Call campus Security at 410-386-8123 - x8123 from a campus phone - to advise them you have called 911.

    In non-emergency/urgent situations where you are concerned about another student's behavior or a student has confided something you do not know how to address, you should ...


    • Include the name of the concerned student
    • Describe the incident or behavior, and your actions - if any - to address the concern
    • Identify any individuals and provide contact information - if known - about those who have shared concerns about the student.
