Press Release

Westminster, Md., February 14, 2020—Carroll Community College (Carroll) revealed the name of its mascot, the Lynx, at the Welcome Back Brunch for students on February 6 in the Babylon Great Hall. The name Lightning was chosen from over 850 student submissions.

Lightning was honored by a Carroll staff and student performance of the song “Lynx Lightnin’,” adapted from the song “Greased Lightnin” famously sung by John Travolta and Jeff Conaway in the musical “Grease.”

After a campus-wide initiative to find a mascot that embodied the College’s character, Carroll chose the lynx, which was suggested by then student Ryan Barron of Westminster. Baron noted that the lynx was “relatable, yet ferocious” and that “the reason many people attend college is to increase their knowledge, wisdom and understanding, and since the lynx is also a constellation, I thought shooting for the stars is the embodiment of what Carroll is all about.”

Once the lynx was chosen, an internal team was formed to oversee the creation of the logo, which was revealed in September 2018. The logo incorporates the College’s colors of blue and white, along with stars as a nod to the Lynx constellation. Carroll President Dr. James D. Ball stated then that “the origin of the word lynx in Latin is lux, or light, and our mission is to enlighten our students through the rigorous education we offer.” During the Welcome Back Brunch, Ball said that “Lightning is the perfect name for our mascot, building off of the importance of education to spark a search for knowledge and to light the way for our students.”

The mascot and logo have become part of all aspects of life at the College including its sports teams.
