Carroll Community College to Offer Critical Need Foreign Languages this Fall

The National Security Language Initiative (NSLI) is a plan to further strengthen national security and prosperity in the 21st century through education, especially in developing foreign language skills. The NSLI will dramatically increase the number of Americans learning critical need foreign languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Hindi, Farsi, and others through new and expanded programs from kindergarten through university and into the workforce.

Of the five languages identified as critical needs languages, Carroll Community College will be offering three of them this fall: Arabic, Chinese and Hindi.

Arabic: Basic 1
This course presents the fundamentals of the modern standard Arabic alphabet and writing system, as well as basic grammar and pronunciation of the language. Vocabulary development will occur through dialogues set in a variety of everyday situations. Discussion of the Arab world, including culture, geography and religion will enhance the learning experience. Instructor: Michael Scott

Arabic: Basic 3
This new course reinforces and builds on your knowledge of the Arabic language - including more advanced grammar and dictionary skills.  Classroom activities will also increase reading and listening proficiency.  Music, geography, religion and other cultural insights are included to bring awareness of life in Arabic-speaking lands.  Prerequisite: successful completion of Arabic Basic 2 or some experience speaking Arabic.  Instructor: Michael Scott

Chinese: Basic 1
Journey to the far East in this new introductory course, learning the basics of Chinese conversation and culture. Pronunciation, basic grammar and the writing system will be introduced, with a goal of providing travelers the tools they need to travel in and enjoy China.  Instructor: Ruby Costea

Hindi and Urdu: Basic 1
Both Hindi and Urdu have been listed as 'critical needs languages' by the United States Department of State. This new introductory course explores the oral and aural components of these two related languages, as well as cultural information about the regions of India and Pakistan where they are spoken.
