Course Description
ART-136, History of Art 2, introduces students to the arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture; from the Renaissance to the 20th Century. The course will focus on the meaning of the artwork, on exploring and unfolding the work's beliefs and ideas, on its projection/reflection of human values, and on the relationship of this historic expression to our own milieu. Emphasis is thus centered on students' understanding and development of their dialogue with Western and Eastern cultural heritage. Prerequisite: exemption/completion of READ-101. Three hours lecture each week. Three credits. Three billable hours.
Course Objectives and Grading Information
Course Objectives Upon successful completion of ART-136 (C or better), the student will have met the following objectives:
1. Define and use appropriate terminology related to art media, periods and styles in both verbal discussion and written assignments. (GE 1)
2. Identify key works of art matching them to artist, period style and culture and order them chronologically. (GE 2)
3. Research, examine and discuss differing positions from which value judgments are made relevant to culture and history using college-level writing skills. (GE 1, 2)
4. Attend a visual art event and discuss its creative impact in written critique. ( GE 1, 7 )
5. Identify significant philosophical and historical movements, religious concepts and relevant iconography associated with benchmark works of art.(GE 6)
