Course Description
NURS-150, Introductory Pharmacology, presents an overview of the basics of nursing pharmacology. Classes of drugs and their interactions with body systems will be stressed. Nursing interventions including client system education will be emphasized. Prerequisite: NURS-103. Fifteen hours of lecture each semester. One credit. One billable hour. Offered Winter term only.

MAJOR COURSE OBJECTIVES: The student will:
1. Classify commonly used drugs according to their actions. (TSLO RN4; TSLO PN4; GE3)
2. Discuss principles of pharmacology. (TSLO RN3; TSLO PN3; GE3)
3. Discuss the nurse?s role as it relates to drug therapy. (TSLO RN2; TSLO RN7; TSLO PN2; TSLO PN7 GE3)
4. Describe nursing interventions, including client teaching, associated with the following drug classifications: (TSLO RN1; TSLO RN6; TSLO PN1; TSLO PN6; GE7)
a. Antibacterials, Antivirals, Antifungals
b. Drugs for GI disorders
c. Drugs for respiratory disorders
d. Analgesics & Anti-inflammatorys
e. Cardiac glycosides, antianginals & anitdysrhythmics
f. Diuretics
g. Antihypertensives
h. Anticoagulants, antiplatelets, thrombolytics
i. Antilipidemics & peripheral vasodilators
j. Adrenergic & adrenergic blockers
k. Cholinergic & cholinergic blockers
l. CNS stimulants & depressants
m. Anticonvulsants
