Carroll Community College Launches Plumbing Apprenticeship Program in Partnership with Local Businesses

Westminster, MD — Carroll Community College is proud to offer the Plumbing Apprenticeship Program, in partnership with the Plumbing Apprenticeship of Carroll County.
The four-year program combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training, preparing students for careers in residential, commercial, and industrial plumbing. Upon completion, apprentices will earn a Journeyman license through the Maryland Department of Labor.
“Our inaugural cohort includes 16 apprentices, double our original goal of 8, representing 10different local businesses,” said Tammi Ledley, Apprenticeship Coordinator at Carroll Community College. “Each apprentice is employed full-time by a licensed plumbing company and is earning while learning.”
Classes meet two evenings per week from September through April. To be eligible, participants must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma, and be employed full-time by a licensed plumbing company.
The curriculum includes some hands-on training in the classroom and covers a wide range of plumbing applications, which include basic plumbing techniques, plumbing codes and regulations, diagnostic and repair, and basic math.
“The Carroll Community College Plumbing Apprentice Program is a great addition to our community,” said CEO/Co-Founder Kevin Nottingham, First Class Mechanical Plumbing & HVAC Services. “Giving direction and additional knowledge to the participants helps to develop them into valuable members of our industry. Participating in the apprentice program provides insight into all aspects of the trade, from general service to new construction, building well-rounded members of our team,” he added.
This program is a win for students, local businesses, and the county, as it builds a pipeline of skilled professionals while giving apprentices the chance to earn a living and build a career.
“I am grateful to have the opportunity to participate in the College Apprenticeship Program,” said Joel Galford, employed with Burgan Plumbing. “I feel the ability to combine learning a trade while working full-time as a plumbing apprentice will help me be successful in any economy.”
