JOB SUMMARY

The customer-focused, service-oriented part-time Student Support Specialist supports non-credit students within the Workforce, Business & Community Education (WBCE) division. This role provides program information, facilitates registration, and delivers general student support via phone, email, and in-person interactions. This position reports to the Director, Workforce, Business and Community Education Support Services.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides WBCE program information and guidance to prospective students on the telephone, by email, and in person
  • Supports non-credit registration and data entry
  • Communicates updates and maintains accurate program information
  • Responds to student questions, including course changes and refunds
  • Assists with general office, program and instructor support as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience in direct customer service, sales, or program support
  • Proficiency with email, spreadsheets and basic office software
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work a varied schedule, up to 29 hours per week, including evenings until 6:30 pm.
  • Must be positive, flexible, cooperative, and supportive.
  • Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with database/data entry/inquiry tracking
  • Work experience in a college or education setting supporting student needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is normally sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Periodically, it requires standing for longer periods of time during presentations or fairs.  Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Hear/talk/communicate – Must be able to exchange information and communicate
  • Visual acuity – Ability to perceive or detect surroundings
  • Mental acuity – Able to focus, concentrate, understand, and convey subject matter
  • Repetitive motion (i.e., keyboarding)
  • Stand/sit/walk – Able to move or traverse from one area to another

WORK ENVIRONMENT:           

College campus, direct contact with students, staff, faculty and the general public in classrooms, common and shared areas, offices, and campus environments. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office, meeting, and training rooms; use of safe workplace practices with office equipment; computers for data entry and word processing with some highly technical applications and new technology systems; avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire and building safety regulations and all College policies. Work hours may vary, up to 29 hours per week, to include evenings until 6:30 pm.

  • Residency restrictions apply: The college does not hire solely online instructors living outside of Maryland. Carroll employees may live in other states, but they must physically work in Maryland the majority of the time.  For income tax obligations, employees must be a resident of DC, VA, WV, MD, or PA on the date employment commences.  In addition, candidates must be willing to come to campus for identity verification within 3 business days of hire date.
