The program provides a well-rounded base of knowledge and skills including computer networking and network security, network analysis, systems hardening, penetration testing, forensics, scripting, and technical writing and documentation. Students who select this curriculum and wish to transfer later to a four-year institution should check with that institution. While many courses will transfer, certain specialized courses may not. Credit may be granted for a current industry-recognized certification. See Mr. Day and page 231 for information. Send credentials to the Records office.

Carroll Community College’s Cybersecurity program is unique in that students in the program benefit from a full-time Cyber Technology Navigator. The Navigator combines college and career advising (exclusively for Cybersecurity students) with outreach to employers and businesses.

Specifically, the Navigator is responsible for:

Employer Outreach: 

  • Promoting the Cybersecurity program and its students to employers
  • Locating careers and internship opportunities in the region
  • Arranging employer campus visits
  • Recruiting employers for Carroll’s annual IT/Cybersecurity Career Fair
  • Collecting job market information and hiring trends

Student Support:

  • Providing career and coursework advising services personalized for each student’s areas of interest
  • Developing resume, interviewing and job search skills
  • Connecting students directly with hiring managers
  • Coordinating mock interview, security clearance, professional presentation and networking skills workshops
  • Assisting students with the industry certification process

As the Cybersecurity program’s director, Matt is responsible for the implementation and administration of the program.  He has twenty years of experience in network administration, systems support and technology training, and holds a master’s degree in Business Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Science, as well as CompTIA A+ and Cisco CCENT certifications.  Matt instructs CYBR-151, Networking 1, CYBR-152, Networking 2, and CYBR-191, Cybersecurity Capstone.

Bobby Keller, CompTIA A+,Network+, Security+, OSFCE
Cyber Technology Coordinator

As the Cybersecurity program’s coordinator, Bobby oversees all technology implementation in the cybersecurity labs.  He has over twenty-five years of systems administration and hardware/software integration experience.  A former police detective and trained forensics investigator, Bobby holds CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications.  He instructs CYBR-106, Computer Repair and Support 1, CYBR-107, Computer Repair and Support 2, CYBR -121, Network Essentials, CYBR-181, Installing & Configuring Windows Server, and CYBR-201, Digital Forensics.

Ron Abigill, BS - ComputerInformation Systems, Master's Certificate - Oracle 9i, CISSP, CompTIA Security+
Adjunct Instructor

Ron is a systems engineer with over ten years of experience in systems engineering and systems security, working on current projects related to DoD enterprise-level software application security.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems and a Master’s Certificate in Oracle, as well as CISSP and CompTIA Security+ certifications.  Ron instructs CYBR-122, Network Security.

Rob Densock, MS - ComputerScience, BS - Computer Science, CCNA
Adjunct Instructor

Rob is a network manager with over 25 years of experience in network design and network operations support.  He holds a master's degree in Computer Science with a concentration in telecommunications and a bachelor's degree in Computer Science as well as a Cisco CCNA certification.  Rob instructs CYBR-151, Networking 1 and CYBR -152, Networking 2.

John is a senior systems engineer with over twenty years of experience in systems engineering and fifteen years of experience in information assurance.  He holds a master’s degree in Information Technology from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy, as well as CISSP, ISSEP, CCNA and CompTIA Security+ certifications.  John instructs CYBR-122, Network Security.

Jack Lounsbury, MS – NetworkSecurity, BS - Internetworking

Jack is a telecommunications engineer with over seventeen years of experience in the telecommunications industry.  He holds a master’s degree in Network Security and a bachelor’s degree in Internetworking.   Jack instructs CYBR-106, Computer Repair and Support 1 and CYBR-107, Computer Repair and Support 2.

Bill is a cybersecurity engineer and penetration tester with over ten years of experience in the information technology and cybersecurity fields.  He holds a master's degree in Information Assurance, as well as OSCP, CISSP, GSE, and CompTIA Network+, Security+ and Linux+ certifications.  Bill instructs CYBR-241, Network Intrusion Detection and Penetration Testing.

Career

The Cybersecurity program is designed to prepare students for a career in cybersecurity, computer network security and administration, computer support, or a related field.  Career options in the cybersecurity field are excellent, with expected job growth in the field of 36.5% through 2022.  Additionally, the Maryland/D.C./Virginia region is ranked #1 nationally for cybersecurity job opportunities.  Due to the increasing occurrence of cybersecurity breaches and society’s dependence on technology, nearly every organization and employer has a need for cybersecurity professionals or services.

Transfer

Students who select this curriculum and wish to transfer later to a four-year institution should check with ARTSYS and that institution. While many courses will transfer, certain specialized courses may not.

Program Goals

  1. Students will effectively communicate technical information to others with varying technology backgrounds, verbally and in writing, using criteria defined by the program.
  2. Students will apply technical reasoning to diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve challenges and threats
  3. Students will demonstrate effective documentation and reporting skills as measured by industry defined technical documentation standards
  4. Students will research and apply technical information to cybersecurity issues
  5. Students will evaluate security scenarios and threats and formulate effective action plans that mitigate risk.
