Associate of Arts in Teaching Secondary Education–Spanish

Carroll’s small class sizes, field placements and ongoing advisory support puts your secondary education in Spanish career at the head of the class. 

The Associate of Arts in Teaching Secondary Education–Spanish program provides students with the opportunity for a seamless transfer to Spanish secondary education programs at Maryland 4-year state and private colleges.

Students in our program experience challenging content-specific coursework, early field placements and advisement by dedicated faculty. Students are assigned both a content-specific advisor and an Education advisor to ensure they meet transfer requirements. Graduates of Carroll’s program also have done well earning transfer/merit scholarships. We offer our affordable, high-quality courses on campus, online or a hybrid of both.


The majority of Secondary Education majors are interested in working in a classroom setting providing academic skills and knowledge to students in the 7th through 12th grades.

Students in Carroll’s Secondary Education program are encouraged to earn a minimum grade of B in all A.A.T. course requirements and work with an Education faculty advisor to ensure a smooth transfer. Students may be required to take additional special education or inclusion courses as part of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree and teacher education certification at 4-year institutions.

Kris Holocker

 M.Ed ELED/Administration Towson University, BS Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education Towson University

Teaching: EDUC 130, 131, 201 ECE 105 and 115 College Success

Interests: Spending time with family, traveling, vacationing on the lake

Bio: Mrs. Holocker's career has included teaching first grade, directing before and after school programs, directing summer camps, owning and operating a home child care center, serving as a resource and referral specialist, working with families as a Parents as Teachers Educator, teaching Come Learn with Me Classes, and teaching in an inclusive, public pre-kindergarten program. She began teaching at Carroll in 2006. She is presently the faculty advisor of the Student Education Association.

Susan Sies 

Education: Community College Leadership Fellow, Morgan State University; M.A., Bowling Green State University; BA, Cum Laude, English Literature, Susquehanna University

Teaching: Education, English and Transitional Studies

Interests: Spending time with family, especially her granddaughter; gardening; thrifting and auctions

Bio: Professor Sies has worked in private and public secondary and post-secondary education for many years. At Carroll Community College, she began as a Transitional Studies faculty member, moving on to teaching in and leading the Education, Transitional Studies and Academic Services Division. Carroll Community College students and colleagues have recognized Professor Sies’ roles as an outstanding teacher and mentor/advisor.

What requirements are there to receive the AAT in Secondary Education – Spanish degree?

To receive the degree, students must have a 2.750 GPA, begin development of their professional teaching portfolio  and submit qualifying scores on pre-professional basic skills test (e.g. SAT, ACT, Praxis CORE) approved by the Maryland State Board of Education to the Carroll Community College Records Office prior to their final Carroll term. The ‘Introduction to Special Education’ course is a necessary requirement for the A.A.T. degree, but is not sufficient to meet all special education or inclusion course requirements for 4-year teacher education programs.

What is needed to participate in field experiences as part of the AAT in Secondary Education program?

Students must be in good academic standing in order to participate in field experiences. One field experience is allowed each term.
