20 Years Of Starry Night
Celebrating 20 Years of Starry Night: Stories from Those Who Made It Shine
As we prepare to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Starry Night, we had the privilege of sitting down with two longtime champions of the gala and the Carroll Community College Foundation—Martin Hill, Hill Development and Rene Shiffler, Blossom and Basket Boutique—to reflect on their connection to the college, favorite Gala memories, and hopes for the future of Carroll.
A Spark of Inspiration
For Marty, involvement began with a shared love of the College and its mission. “My wife and I were closely engaged with Carroll Community College (Carroll) and made aware of the Starry Night gala early on. It sounded like a fun night and another way to support Carroll.”
Rene’s path was different, but just as impactful. “My first connection to Starry Night began when I was hired as the event decorator. That first year, I was simply a vendor, but by the second year I was invited to join the planning committee. From there, my involvement quickly grew from being asked to serve on the Foundation Board, chairing the Starry Night Committee, serving as Vice President of the Board, and eventually stepping into the role of Board President.”
Why They Keep Coming Back
What has kept them returning year after year? For Marty, it’s the community spirit. “Like that very first Starry Night, every year has been a amazing time interacting with our community partners with great food and an enjoyable show. My granddaughters have looked forward to Starry Night since they were pre-teens—they always hope there are tickets so they can invite friends.”
For Rene, it’s the creativity and sense of purpose. “I love the challenge of transforming the same space into something completely new and different each year. And the best part is knowing that all the fun and beauty of the evening directly supports our students.”
Favorite Memories
Both Marty and Rene smile when recalling their favorite moments. For Marty, it was the year of the Billy Joel tribute show: “There were so many people dancing in the aisles and at their seats—it was obvious everyone was having a GREAT time.”
Rene remembers the 60’s tribute group with its colorful, psychedelic décor. “We had multi-colored lights, vibrant flowers, lava lamps, and even black lights down the hallway to the theatre. It was unforgettable.”
Growth Through the Years
Over two decades, Starry Night has evolved in ways that keep the event fresh and engaging. Rene reflects, “The gala has evolved with elevated catering concepts, engaging auctions, the launch of Give to the Cause, and the shift to digital bidding. Each change has helped keep Starry Night a premier kickoff to the holiday season in Carroll County.”
Marty adds that what sets Starry Night apart is its inclusive, lively atmosphere. “Other galas tend to be formal and serious. Starry Night is different—you’re encouraged to mingle, dance, and connect with people of all ages. It’s truly a community event.”
Why It Matters
Beyond the decorations, the food, and the entertainment, Rene sees Starry Night as a powerful symbol. “The event shows how deeply the College and Foundation are woven into the fabric of Carroll County. Everyone feels the need to be there, because they understand how important the work of the Foundation is to the health of our county.”
For Marty, the bigger picture comes down to sustainability. “Long-term planning requires dependable funding. That’s why long-term giving is so important—it ensures the College can continue to serve generations of students.”
The Heart of It All: Students
Ultimately, the mission behind the sparkle is what keeps Rene inspired. “The students who move me most are those who have experienced enough of life to truly appreciate the opportunities before them. There’s something especially powerful about a single mother, working two jobs, striving to earn her degree. Helping to ensure she doesn’t have to worry about paying for school is incredibly rewarding.”
Looking Ahead
As we celebrate A Very Starry Night this December 6th, both Marty and Rene share the same hope: that the gala continues to grow stronger, raise incredible funds for students, and remain a joyful, memorable tradition for the Carroll community.
