Course Description

HLTH-201, Women's Health, examines the latest scientific research developments affecting the lives of women in contemporary society. Course content includes a multidisciplinary approach to women's health issues and provides a framework for informed personal decisions. Prerequisite: exemption/completion READ-099. Three hours lecture each week. Three credits. Three billable hours. DIVERSITY/WORLD VIEW. GENERAL EDUCATION

Course Objectives and Grading Information

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course, you will: 

1. Identify terminology and apply concepts as they relate to a wellness lifestyles, stress management, mental health, death and dying. (PG1, GE2,7, EXAM 1, EXAM 4) 

2. Discuss screenings, healthcare processes, and informed decision-making throughout a woman?s life. (PG1, GE2,7,EXAM 1) 

3. Identify terminology and apply concepts as they relate to healthy relationships, sexual anatomy and behavior, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections. (PG1, GE2,7, EXAM 2) 

4. Identify terminology and apply concepts as they relate to achieving optimal nutrition and physical fitness. (PG1, GE2,7, EXAM 3) 

5. Identify terminology and apply concepts as they relate to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and cancer. (PG1, GE2,7, EXAM 3) 

6. Identify terminology and apply concepts as they relate to the prevention of chronic illnesses associated with alcohol, drugs, and tobacco use. (PG1, GE2,7,EXAM 4) 

7. Participate in and critique a wellness activity that connects you to a larger college wide or community environment.(PG2,GE1,6,7, WELLNESS REPORT) 

8. Collect and interpret personal wellness data to formulate effective goals and strategies.(PG1,5, GE1,2,3,7, HEALTH BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS) 

9. Produce a scholarly annotated bibliography on a specific health topic.(PG1,3, GE1,2,4, ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY) 

10. Orally communicate research findings on a specific health topic to the class using visual media (PG4, GE1,2,4,ORAL PRESENTATION) 

11. Identify health behaviors, discuss their impact and make specific recommendations for improving personal wellness.(PG5, GE1,2, FINAL PAPER)
