HLTH-225, Stress Management and Tension Control

Course Description

HLTH-225, Stress Management and Tension Control, introduces the student to the nature of stress and the principles of stress management. This course reviews the research of pioneers in stress research, presents a brief but comprehensive study of psychoneurophysiology, and exposes the student to holistic approaches to stress management. Students will keep a personal stress awareness/reduction journal and participate in a variety of relaxation techniques (progressive muscle relaxation, autogenics, self-hypnosis, biofeedback, guided imagery, meditation and others). Prerequisite: HLTH-101 or PHED-101 or permission of the instructor. Three hours lecture each week. Three credits. Three billable hours. Offered Fall and Spring terms.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: 

1. Identify terminology and apply concepts as they relate to the dimensions of wellness, stressors, sources and symptoms of stress. (PG1, GE2,7, Exam 1) 

2. Identify terminology and apply concepts as they relate to the physiological changes that occur during acute and chronic stress. (PG1, GE2,7, Exam 2) 

3. Identify terminology and apply concepts as they relate to the power of choosing our thoughts and reactions to stress. (PG1,GE2,7, Exam 3) 

4. Identify terminology and apply concepts as that relate to benefits of sleep, exercise, healthy diet, time and money management. (PG1, GE2,7, Exam 4) 

5. Identify terminology and apply concepts as that relate to values clarification, social support, effective listening, conflict management and healing your environment. (PG1, GE2,7, Exam 5) 

6. Participate in and critique a wellness activity that connects you to a larger college wide or community environment. (PG2, GE1,6,7, Campus Event, Journals) 

7. Collect and interpret personal wellness data to formulate effective goals and strategies. (PG1, PG5, GE2,3,7, Assessments, Journals) 

8. Analyze scholarly research findings on a stress topic. (PG1,3,GE1,2,4, Research Articles) 

9. Communicate research findings to the class using a computer application. (PG 4, GE1,2,4, Oral Report)
