Carroll Community College Foundation Executive Director Steve Wantz Announces Retirement and Receives Emeritus Recognition After More Than Two Decades of Foundation Leadership
Westminster, Md. — Carroll Community College announces the retirement of Steve Wantz, Executive Director of the Carroll Community College Foundation, after nearly 24 years of distinguished service. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Wantz has been awarded Emeritus status, one of the College’s highest honors, reserved for individuals who exemplify exceptional commitment and service to students, the College, and the community.
A Carroll alumnus and first-generation college graduate, Wantz joined the College in 2002 following a 26-year career in financial services. When he assumed leadership of the Foundation, its managed assets totaled less than $750,000. Today, that figure exceeds $36 million, providing transformational funding for scholarships, academic innovation, and capital projects.
Under Wantz’s direction, the Foundation completed four major campaigns, each surpassing its goal, including the most recent, Turning Hopes and Dreams into Reality, which raised a record $14.46 million to enhance student success through scholarships, campus improvements, and workforce development initiatives. He also established enduring initiatives, including the President’s Society, the Joseph F. Shields Legacy Circle, and the beloved Starry Night Gala, which has raised more than $2 million for scholarships over its 20-year history.
“Steve’s leadership has transformed what is possible for Carroll and its students,” said Dr. Rosalie Mince, President of Carroll Community College. “His ability to connect people to our mission has built not only financial strength, but also trust, pride, and a sense of shared purpose that will endure for decades.”
Throughout his tenure, Wantz especially enjoyed mentoring first-generation college students, offering guidance and encouragement to help them navigate academic challenges and achieve their dreams. His personal connection to these students reflects his own experience as a first-generation college graduate and underscores his lifelong commitment to access and opportunity.
“Steve’s unwavering commitment to student success and his visionary approach to philanthropy have left an indelible mark on Carroll. His work has opened doors for countless students and strengthened the College’s ability to serve its mission,” said Dr. Kristie Crumley, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs.
As he transitions into retirement, Wantz looks forward to spending more time with his wife, five children, and eight grandchildren while remaining active in his church and community.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve the College that gave me my start,” Wantz said. “Carroll represents opportunity and hope, and I’ve been blessed to help others discover theirs.”
