Launch your HVACR career with hands-on training that pays. In Carroll’s HVACR Apprenticeship training program, you’ll work fulltime, earning while you learn, and become a licensed Journeyman in as few as 4 years. Already have experience? You may even skip your 1st year by passing an exam.

Duration:

640 classroom hours (160 hours per year) and 8,000 on-the-job training hours.

Schedule:

Classes start in Fall; classes meet 2 evenings a week

Journeyman license from the Maryland Department of Labor

Eligibility:

Must be at least 18 years old and employed by a licensed HVACR company & sponsored by that company for training, or find employment by the start of the 2nd year.

In our HVACR Apprenticeship program, you’ll gain the skills and experience needed to become a skilled HVACR professional. You’ll start with foundational tasks and progress to advanced hands-on work, including:

  • Installation & Service: Learn to install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in homes and commercial settings.
  • Hands-On Support: Begin by assisting experienced technicians with tasks like carrying materials, insulating refrigerant lines, and cleaning furnaces.
  • Advanced Technical Skills: Progress to cutting and soldering pipes, diagnosing electrical and electronic circuits, and performing more complex repairs.
  • Real-World Experience: Build practical knowledge by working alongside professionals on live projects, preparing you for journeyman-level responsibilities.

This combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training ensures you graduate ready to take on a full spectrum of HVACR work.

This trade is regulated by the State of Maryland. The Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council formulates apprenticeship policies and registers standards.

Licensure/Certification Earned

Upon successful completion of this training, you are awarded an HVACR Journeyman license from the Maryland Department of Labor.

Career Outlook

The demand for skilled HVACR technicians is strong and growing. Employment in this field is projected to increase by 8–9% from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations.

This growth is driven by new construction, the need to replace aging systems, and a growing focus on energy-efficient and smart home technologies. Approximately 40,000 job openings are expected each year.

  1. What does an HVACR Apprentice do?
    HVACR apprentices are tradesmen specializing in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning/refrigeration systems. Work may include installing, servicing, and repairing heating and air conditioning systems in residences and commercial establishments.
  2. Where does the training take place?
    Classroom instruction takes place on Carroll’s campus two evenings a week. The apprentice will also work fulltime for a local HVAC company for their on-the-job training.
  3. Is work experience required for apprenticeships?
    Work experience is not necessary, but you must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED to enroll.
  4. How do I enroll in the HVACR Apprenticeship program?

  5. When should I enroll?
    Classes begin in September but please contact HACC at least 30 to 60 days before the start date so your paperwork can be completed.
  6. How much do HVACR Technicians make an hour?
    The entry-level wage for HVACR Technicians is $18-$27 per hour. (Wages are based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and are estimates only.)
