IEP Meeting Support for Parents and Guardians
Helping You Feel Heard, Prepared, and Focused on Your Child
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting is where important decisions are made about your child’s goals, services, and support. These meetings can sometimes feel overwhelming.
You may have experienced:
- Feeling outnumbered in a room full of professionals
- Hearing educational or legal terms that are unfamiliar or unclear
- Worrying about agreeing to something you don’t fully understand
- Past meetings that felt tense or emotional
- Concern that focus has shifted away from your child and toward paperwork
If you want collaboration—not conflict—you are not alone.
What Is IEP Meeting Facilitation?
IEP meeting facilitation provides independent, neutral support during your child’s IEP meeting.
The facilitator is not part of the school system and does not represent either side. Their role is to support the communication process so everyone can focus on your child’s needs.
The facilitator does not make decisions about services or placement. All decisions remain with the IEP team.
How an IEP Facilitator Supports You
Before the Meeting
- Speaks with you to understand your concerns
- Helps clarify what you would like addressed
- Assists in developing a clear agenda
During the Meeting
- Ensures everyone has space to speak
- Helps clarify educational terminology
- Supports respectful dialogue
- Refocuses discussion on student-centered goals
- Helps ensure important concerns are not overlooked
Facilitation is not about changing the outcome. It is about improving the process so decisions can be made thoughtfully and collaboratively.
Benefits for Families
IEP meeting facilitation can:
- Help you feel heard and understood
- Reduce misunderstandings
- Create a more organized meeting environment
- Keep the focus on your child
- Make meetings feel less stressful
- Support productive collaboration with the school
Can I request an IEP facilitator?
Yes. Either a parent/guardian or the school may request facilitation. Because the process is voluntary, both parties must agree.
Is this service free?
Yes. IEP meeting facilitation is provided at no cost.
Will the facilitator advocate for me?
No. The facilitator remains neutral and does not take sides. Their role is to support communication and meeting structure.
Will the facilitator make decisions about my child’s services?
No. All decisions remain with the IEP team.
When should I request facilitation?
Please request at least 10 days before the meeting when possible to allow time for preparation.
What is the difference between facilitation and mediation?
Facilitation supports communication and organization during an IEP meeting. Mediation is a separate dispute-resolution process used when structured negotiation is needed.
