Carroll Community College Participates in First Maryland STEM Festival

Carroll Community College (Carroll) will participate in the first Maryland STEM Festival. The Festival will take place at the locations of various participating organizations from Nov. 6 to Nov. 15, 2015. The Maryland STEM Festival offers fun, engaging and accessible topics in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) around the state through an impressive array of events and activities. Without needing to travel great distances, the general public may further investigate all aspects of STEM through collaborative and interactive programming. The week is being organized by The Maryland STEM Festival Planning Committee, which consists of members from diverse STEM organizations across the state. Carroll is one of several financial sponsoring organizations of the inaugural statewide STEM Festival.


Events at Carroll Community College

On Friday, Nov. 6, Carroll will host an exciting STEM Professionals Panel. Top researchers and professionals in the STEM field will talk to college students, faculty, staff, and to high school students/teachers from Carroll County Public Schools, a partner with the college. The speaker panel begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Theater in the Scott Center at Carroll, followed by a question and answer session that concludes around 11:15 a.m. The presentation is open to the community and is free of charge. 

On Saturday Nov. 7, the schedule begins at 9 a.m. with a learning opportunity about STEM programs and courses at the college. The event in the Great Hall is open to the community and concludes around 10:30 a.m. Professor Wizard will present a science demonstration from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Theater, which is open to the community and free of charge. 

College President Dr. James D. Ball said: "The caliber of presenters and the extensive offering of STEM topics are unparalleled in the county. I want to share my deepest appreciation to everyone who worked so hard to make these events possible in order to encourage and nurture greater student interest in STEM fields." 

Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Jan Ohlemacher said: "The events on campus as part of the Maryland STEM Festival represent a unique blend of learning opportunities with a sense of fun and wonder.I am pleased that Carroll Community College can participate in such a comprehensive way to support STEM endeavors in the region." 

"It is tremendously exciting that Carroll County Public Schools students will have the opportunity to learn of cutting edge careers and their dynamic nature at a time when they are making important decisions about their career paths," said Bryan Shumaker, STEM coordinator at CCPS. "Knowing three of the panelists, I can attest to their amazing ability to convey things that will make students' minds come alive. Kudos to the community college for its partnership to provide such an exciting start to the Maryland STEM Festival." 

Key officials from the county delegation, the college board of trustees, Carroll County Public Schools and the college will be present in support of the events.
