Major of the Month News and Stories Headers Communication

What happens when a single well-chosen word inspires action, changes a mind, or opens a new door? That’s the power of communication, and at Carroll Community College, communication & writing students are learning to use that power to inform, inspire, and connect.

In Carroll’s Communication Studies, Journalism, Creative Writing, and Literature programs, students explore how ideas, stories, and voices shape the world. Whether your passion lies in writing, media, or literature, these programs give you the tools to express yourself clearly and think critically about the messages that move society.

Exploring the Power of Language

Carroll’s English pathway offers two distinct concentrations—Communication Studies & Journalism and Creative Writing & Literature—allowing students to tailor their studies to match their goals. Coursework blends analytical thinking with creative exploration, helping students write, edit, research, and present ideas with clarity and confidence.

For many, it’s a journey of discovery. They learn not only how to communicate effectively, but also how language and storytelling can influence change, foster empathy, and drive innovation.

“I always knew that I wanted to work with people, so I figured communications & writing would be the best route for me,” said Emilee Kuzmak, a graduate of Carroll’s Communication Studies and Journalism program. “I told my advisor about my passion for writing, my passion for people, and my passion for being present in the community, and she proposed communications and journalism. Carroll has given me the resources to develop myself into the person I hope to be as a professional post-grad.”

Across nearly every industry, skilled communicators are in demand. Carroll’s Communication & Writing programs help students build the abilities employers value most, including:

  • Clear, persuasive writing across different platforms
  • Editing and revision for accuracy and impact
  • Public speaking and professional presentation
  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Research and information literacy

These skills are developed through hands-on learning experiences such as collaborative writing workshops, student publications, digital storytelling projects, and real-world assignments that simulate professional communication environments.

“My degree in English opened doors early in my career,” said Isabel DeFeo, Communication Arts Division Chair at Carroll, offering a personal testament to opportunities for Communication & Writing program graduates. “That first opportunity exposed me to different world cultures, try my hand in sales and marketing, and start my own business. When I went into higher education, I drew on all those skills I developed in college through my degrees in English and Professional Writing.”
