Joy Nelson Student Excellence Showcase Carroll Community College

Course:  Introduction to Speech Communication, COMM 105
Professor:
Austrie Duarte
Assignment Title:
 Persuasive speech

Assignment Details

My speech was designed to persuade the class that graphic novels should be used by professors in college classes. I used the college’s data to understand that even college students struggle with learning and graphic novels can help. Also, when life or procrastination get in the way there is less time to read longer books and students are quick to use AI or a summery website.

Application

Graphic novels are useful for exploring cultures and helping to see the world from a different perspective. This project helped me explore the different kinds of graphic novels as well as read different articles written by specialists.

Results/Conclusions

Towards the end of my project I found it helpful to use professional’s insight to cement the important of these ideas. I hope the next committees discussing curriculum takes people with learning disabilities more into consideration. Using graphic novels to translate the same ideas just in a different media, a media which is more fun and has a more successful learning rate.

Challenges and Successes

One challenge I faced was getting the data for this college. Since it was specific to Carroll Community College students, I wanted specific data to make it personal. Thankfully, my teacher Professor Duarte reached out to someone is records and I received helpful graphs and charts to add into my speech. Because of my love of graphic novels, a success was being able to incorporate multiple personal stories into my speech. This made it more fun and interesting for myself and the audience.
