Social Work Concentration, A.A. Frequently Asked Questions

Social Work is an applied field meant to address social problems by providing people with information, resources, support and opportunities to be successful. Sociology is the study of human behavior and institutions. While some sociologists study social problems, researching these issues is a different job than what social workers typically do when they work to resolve barriers to success.

Entry-level positions in social work typically require a Bachelor’s degree, and a Master’s of Social Work is typically required to be a social worker. An AA degree in this area is intended to prepare you for transfer to a 4-year institution; however, people with an AA degree in this field will have the skills that employers in general are looking for: critical thinking, problem solving, communicating, analyzing data, and managing and working with others.
