Description
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Student Laboratory Assistant will support biology and chemistry laboratory courses by assisting with preparation, organization, and maintenance of instructional lab materials. This position provides students with hands-on experience in a laboratory setting while reinforcing good laboratory practices, safety awareness, and organizational skills.
Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager or Lab Technician, the student assistant will:
- Prepare laboratory materials and equipment prior to scheduled classes (e.g., setting up glassware, instruments, models, and supplies)
- Assist with basic preparation of lab solutions and media following provided instructions
- Clean, sanitize, and store laboratory equipment after classes
- Maintain organization of lab spaces, storage areas, and prep rooms
- Stock laboratory supplies and notify supervisor of low inventory
- Assist with routine laboratory tasks as needed
- Follow all laboratory safety rules, chemical hygiene policies, and college procedures
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Job Requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
- Attention to detail and good organizational skills
- Dependability and punctuality
- Willingness to learn proper laboratory techniques and safety practices
- Applicants must qualify for the federal work-study program.
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as cleaning and organizing lab materials
PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Enrollment in or completion of introductory biology and/or chemistry courses
- Interest in science, laboratory work, or a related career field
HOURS NEEDED
- 2-4 hours a week from Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30am-4:30pm
- Schedule arranged around student’s class schedule and lab needs

- Be registered for at least six credits with a 2.0 GPA
- Student Workers under the age of 18 must provide a valid work permit prior to starting employment
- If eligible, your application will be forwarded to supervisors with open positions
- The application will be held for one year, July 1 to June 30

- If selected, you and your supervisor must complete all federal, state and college forms. This document is obtained from your supervisor or the Human Resources webpage.
- Complete and submit all federal, state, and college employment forms. The I-9 is submitted to your supervisor and the other forms are submitted to studentemployment@carrollcc.edu
- Create a work schedule with your supervisor that does not conflict with your class schedule.
- When all forms are turned in you and your supervisor will be notified so a start date can be established.
