Carroll Community College to Open Virtual Reality Lab for Fall Semester
Experiences Are Free for Students to Enhance Learning Across Multiple Disciplines
Westminster, Md., September 3, 2021—Carroll Community College (Carroll) will open a cutting-edge Virtual Reality (VR) Lab on its campus on September 7th. Nicknamed the “Lynx Lab,” it will provide VR experiences spanning a broad range of topics, including anatomy, history, coding, languages, science and engineering. These virtual experiences will be free and by appointment only for students and faculty.
“Carroll has always been on the leading edge of educational experiences for our students, and virtual reality provides a new and powerful avenue for learning,“ said Dr. James D. Ball, President, Carroll Community College.
There are currently more than 40 programs that students can experience, spanning a wide variety of topics, with more to be added in the coming months. Some examples include:
- Medical training, including a VR anatomy atlas
- History and time travel: A tour of Anne Frank’s house, the shipwreck of the Titanic, and the experience of the 1943 Berlin Blitz
- Exploration and engineering: An expedition to the summit of Mount Everest and a trip to the International Space Station
“While many people associate VR solely with gaming, this technology provides an immersive, visual learning experience that is both powerful and engaging,” said Andrea Gravelle, Director of Online Learning & Media, who oversees the lab. “Studies have shown that VR leads to higher student engagement, and it also provides opportunities for students to collaborate. Plus, it is a whole lot of fun!”
