Press Release

Carroll Community College will host the Annual Penguin Random House Book Fair (Book Fair) on Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3, 2018.

The event kicks off with a Friday movie night, with showings of “The LEGO Ninjago Movie” at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Theater in the Scott Center. Tickets can be purchased for $4 per person between February 26 and March 1 by calling 410-386-8150. Tickets are also available in person on March 2 starting at 4 p.m. in the Theater. Attendees are encouraged to come early at 3 p.m. for the pre-sale of over 4,000 adult and children book titles offered at a 20 percent discount.

New this year is a 7 p.m. Friday evening book talk with Melanie Benjamin, The New York Times best-selling author of The Aviator’s Wife. Benjamin will talk about her latest book, The Girls in the Picture, which focuses on the friendship and creative partnership between two of Hollywood’s earliest female legends – screenwriter Frances Marion and superstar Mary Pickford. Tickets are $25 and include a copy of the book, a book signing, a $5 Penguin Random House Book Fair coupon and entry into a reception with light refreshments starting at 6 p.m. Benjamin’s other titles will be available for purchase. The Carroll County Public Library (CCPL) and A Likely Story Bookstore are presenting the author talk in the College’s Bollinger Family Conference Center (K100). To register online go to CCPL’s website: https://library.carr.org/benjamin

On Saturday, March 3, the Annual Penguin Random House Book Fair opens at 9 a.m. in the Babylon Great Hall and offers discounted book sales, free books for children (select books while supplies last), and a multitude of children’s activities including: a scavenger hunt, LEGO face painting, LEGO building room, hands-on STEM activities, inflatable games (some activities will require a $3 wristband), silent auction and concessions.

Also on Saturday at 9:45 a.m., Jon Burgerman, Penguin Random House author and award-winning artist, will hold an interactive illustration presentation and will talk about his latest picture book Rhyme Crime. Copies of Rhyme Crime can be purchased at the Book Fair prior to the book’s expected public sale in April. Burgerman’s book Splat! will also be on sale. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London and others collect Burgerman’s art worldwide, and his commercial collaborators include Nike, Puma, Samsung, Pepsi, Coke, Levis, AOL, MTV, and Rip Curl.

The Carroll County Public Library will host a Children’s Story Time at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Returning with great enthusiasm is the Professor Wizard’s Wonders of Science Show at 12:30 p.m. Student authors, who participated in the annual Student Writing Contest, will read their winning entries at 2:30 p.m. and the Book Fair concludes at 4 p.m.

The silent auction bidding opens March 1, 2018 at www.handbid.com/auctions/book-fair-2018 and closes at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 3. This year’s auction, which is filled with an abundance of family oriented items, has a “Buy It Now” feature for people to secure their purchases early. Bidders need not to be present to win and can claim their items the following week at the College.

“Once again, the Carroll Community College will host this premier event which draws patrons from around the region to celebrate reading,” said College President Dr. James D. Ball. “It is a pleasure to gather together individuals and families for the Annual Penguin Random House Book Fair, an event which the community so fervently supports! We look forward to entertaining, enlightening and encouraging literacy among members of the community!”

“I especially wish to bestow a wealth of gratitude to Penguin Random House, to our generous sponsors and to our volunteers who make this event possible,” Ball said. “One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event are used for scholarships at Carroll, which continue to be a critical need for our students and the College.”
