Press Release

Westminster, Md., April 24, 2019—Carroll Community College (Carroll) caps its concert series with a performance by Bob Rychlik, internationally recognized player, composer and teacher of fujara, koncovka and other overtone flutes, along with acoustic guitarist Sara Towe Horsfall, on Thursday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Theater in the Scott Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

A fujara is a three-holed fipple flute that is played in a standing position with the flute held close to the body. It can be more than six feet tall and was used in Slovakia by shepherds to communicate with each other. Rychlik, a native of Czechoslovakia, fled communist rule and settled in Maryland with his family.  His compelling personal story, along with a demonstration of the fujara, can be heard in his TedXNaperville talk “Fujara and Freedom”:

Rychlik has been promoting the fujara and its music in the U.S. and Europe, connecting fujara makers and players worldwide. He established and co-organized three international fujara festivals in Slovakia, and taught fujara workshops in the U.S., Slovakia and Czech Republic. He has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., folk festivals in D.C. and Maryland, Czech and Slovak ethnic festivals in Baltimore and Virginia, and other venues in the United States and worldwide. In Carroll County, he has been teaching fujara and koncovka at Common Ground on the Hill at McDaniel College for the past eight years.

“We are thrilled to bring this unique and powerful performance to Carroll and the community,” said Eric McCullough, Director of Music, Carroll Community College. “Rychlik’s tremendous talent, personal connection to the instrument’s history, and sense of humor will make for an entertaining evening.”
