Carroll Reads is a community reading and discussion group dedicated to exploring important books and films together and sharing the experience in a thoughtful, engaging environment. Our goal is to foster meaningful conversations, encourage reflection, and highlight how reading as a group enhances our understanding and appreciation of literature.

Fall 2025 Book Selection

A Worse Place Than Hell: How the Civil War Battle of Fredericksburg Changed a Nation by John Matteson
• Pulitzer Prize–winning author John Matteson illuminates three harrowing months of the Civil War and their enduring legacy for America.
• Through the eyes of five notable Americans—including Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Walt Whitman, and Louisa May Alcott—Matteson provides unique and enlightening perspectives on the Civil War and this pivotal battle.
• The Battle of Fredericksburg, in December 1862, shattered Union forces and Northern confidence, but the Union learned hard lessons and moved forward toward ultimate victory.
• Matteson writes with an engaging style and a keen attention to fascinating details.
