Carroll Community College Offers Beekeeping Basics Class
Westminster, Md., Carroll Community College will offer a Continuing Education and Training class about beekeeping for profit, fun, or for growing a garden. Classes will be held March 23 through April 13, 2011 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in room K 100A, on campus at 1601 Washington Rd. On Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., the last class in the series will be held at Hashawa Apiary.
The cost is $45 per family (MD Senior Adults: $45). The cost includes a textbook and a one-year membership in the Carroll County Beekeepers Association. This course is appropriate for children ages 10 and up, accompanied by an adult. The course number is SBA-563-A3.
Students will learn about:
- Getting started
- Equipment and assembly
- Honey bee biology
- Seasonal management and swarming
- Diseases
A hands-on lab provides:
- Honey extraction demonstration
- Open hive observations
- Swarm collecting presentation
- Hive inspecting demonstration
- Re-queening instruction
