Carroll Community College Presents Art Exhibit from March 16 through April 25

Westminster, Md.--The Gallery in the Scott Center at Carroll Community College will be the site of an art exhibit titled "The Art of Anu Das: Breaking Boundaries, Voices of Hope" from Sunday, March 16 through Friday, April 25. An opening reception will be held Sunday, March 16 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Anu Das was born in India. For the past two decades she has been making prints, artist books and mixed media fabric and paper pieces which deal with the social and cultural issues of women such as fertility, childhood, marriage, widow-hood and raising awareness among women in a patriarchal society. Her work transcends geography to include women who are affected by conflicts on the borders of any country and who suffer from isolation, displacement, physical and psychological abuse, and disabilities. Her recent work addresses the diversity and profound nature of these struggles through the use of nearly extinct folk-art and the rich colors and textures of her birthplace, Orissa. Das’s mission is to communicate a sense of the positive in the midst of crippling violence inherent in the lives of so many Indian women and to assist them into the mainstream so that they can be emotionally, physically and economically independent. She continues to work with her late brother’s Center for Disabilities in India where women design and sell their folk art, keeping the art alive and their dignity intact.

Das received her Bachelor of Arts from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. She resides in Maryland with her family where she continues to make art and be a voice of hope through her exhibits.

Anu Das will be at the reception and looks forward to discussing her art with the public.
