Westminster, MD─ October marks the one-year anniversary of opening the on-campus Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training range at Carroll Community College. In partnership with North American Trade School and Carroll County Workforce Development, Carroll offers a comprehensive CDL truck driving program.

Students are ready to test for their Class A Commercial Driver’s License upon completing 280 hours of training and can begin working immediately.  We have 33 students who have completed the program, with five more expected to do so at the end of the month. Eight of these completers are women.

What makes Carroll’s program so special? One of the recent completers had her CDL-B license but wanted to get her CDL-A license to expand the type of work she could take on. “Carroll Community College is awesome. I’m 64 years old and proud of Carroll Community College and the fact that I can live here and take advantage of this,” said Lisa Conklin.

Over the next decade, the U.S. will need nearly one million new drivers because of growth and retirement trends in this industry. In addition to the positive job prospects, students may qualify for substantial tuition support through the College’s partnership with Carroll County Workforce Development.

“This is a triple win for employers, students, and the community. Our short-term programs provide opportunities for students to gain in-demand skills leading to immediate employment,” said Janet Ladd, Senior Director of Corporate Services and Workforce Development at Carroll Community College.

North American Trade Schools (NATS) provide safe tractor-trailers and top-notch instructors to prepare our students in accordance with state and federal laws.

Carroll has been very active in working with the employer community, building partnerships to provide pathways to CDL employment with various local employers that will help meet the critical workforce needs of local and regional employers.

“My job as a CDL Instructor is to bring the potential out of people and motivate them to believe in themselves to achieve a goal. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing the gratitude on their faces when they’ve done and learned something that they wouldn’t think would be possible,” said Eugene Baze, an instructor with North American Trade Schools.
