About the Program
Did you know that doctors and other health professionals often rely on the work of laboratory professionals to make an accurate patient diagnosis? Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) analyze blood, body fluids, and microbiology cultures; work up blood units for transfusions; operate automated equipment, instruments, and analyzers; and conduct manual testing in accordance with federal laws, guidelines, and national standards.
The Medical Laboratory Technician Associate of Applied Science degree program is offered at Anne Arundel Community College through the Maryland Education Alliance (MEA). Through the MEA agreement, students complete initial coursework at Carroll Community College, such as general studies, before transferring to Anne Arundel Community College for specialized discipline coursework. (Please refer to Anne Arundel Community College catalog for additional information.)
Upon graduation, you can be credentialed as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification.
The Anne Arundel Community College Medical Laboratory Technician program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). NAACLS is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Transfer
The Medical Laboratory Technician A.A.S. degree program is a transfer program to Anne Arundel Community College. Students will complete pre-clinical requirements at Carroll Community College. Clinical requirements are completed at Anne Arundel Community College upon acceptance to the MLT program.
Graduates of the program can pursue additional education to earn a Bachelor’s degree as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS). Many MLS graduates go on to dental, medical, and pharmacy schools as well as physician assistant and pathology assistant programs.
Career
Graduates of this program are prepared for entry-level employment in laboratory medicine to meet the current and the increasing demands for Medical Laboratory Technicians.
MLTs can go directly into the clinical laboratory workforce in hospitals, medical and diagnostic laboratories, and doctor’s offices. They function as an essential member of the health care team, performing phlebotomy procedures; procuring and performing blood and non-blood testing in the clinical laboratory; and aiding the physician in diagnosing, monitoring, and determining treatment modalities.
Most MLTs work fulltime. Some states require technicians to be licensed.
